Homemade Play Dough

After I put the girls to bed tonight, I made some play dough for tomorrow. I really like this recipe because it was easy and it's edible, not that I'd want to! Around here, it's not a question of whether or not Arya will put it in her mouth, it is how much. With this play dough, I won't have to worry!

Play Dough

2 c. flour
2 c. water
1/2 c. salt
1 Tbl cream of tartar
2 Tbl vegetable oil
assorted food coloring
Extras: rubber gloves & wax paper

In a sauce pan, mix all ingredients except for coloring. Cook over medium heat until dough thickens. Be sure to constantly stir the dough so it will not burn.

After it has thickened, let cool in pan for about 5 minutes. Remove from pan and place on wax paper. Using rubber gloves, pinch off a nice sized amount of dough. Drop several drops of coloring into dough. Kneed the dough until the color is fully distributed.

The coloring in the dough will not rub off on your hands after it has been mixed. We sprinkled some glitter in the dough to see how it would turn out. It looked really neat, but the glitter came off on our hands.

The dough can be stored in an air tight container for a long time. If it starts to harden, add a little water to soften it back up.
